Mosquito nets are designed to provide a barrier between mosquitoes and people or pets to prevent mosquito and other flying insect bites. Nets with mesh smaller than 1.2 mm will keep mosquitoes away. To keep smaller insects (such as biting midges) away, holes of 0.6 mm or smaller will help keep flying insects away.
An effective and durable mosquito net will be made from a durable, high-quality mesh fabric. 100% polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene outdoor mesh materials that are waterproof are often considered the best fabrics. The mesh material should also be breathable, as too thick a mesh can block air flow and generate too much heat within the net. A net with 250 to 300 holes per square inch is usually ideal.
To help keep mosquitoes out and prevent bites, it is important to ensure that there are no gaps or holes in the net and that the net itself is large enough so that it does not stick directly to your skin. If in doubt, make a mistake on the side of a slightly larger net, as the goal is to have it hanging rather than leaning on you while you relax outdoors.
Some patio nets are treated with insect repellents to increase their effectiveness. The insecticide used to treat these nets will kill and repel mosquitoes and other insects. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), insecticide-treated nets have been shown to reduce mosquito-borne diseases and reduce the total number of mosquitoes.
Only two insecticides, pyrrole and pyrethroids, are currently approved for use on mosquito nets. However, there are a number of aerosol and liquid formulations that include both insecticides and are approved for use. Ensure that your mosquito nets use registered products and carefully follow any instructions provided.
Use a fan to create a breeze in or around your porch, balcony or terrace, as it is difficult for mosquitoes to fly when there is a breeze.
Lights attract mosquitoes, so keep lighting to a minimum and if not, choose yellow, pink or orange lights. Avoid UV, incandescent and white fluorescent lamps.
If the temperature permits, wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers to minimise exposed skin and prevent mosquito bites.
